Holy Rood Stubbington pictured a couple of days before the summer solstice. This is the larger of the two churches in the parish of Crofton. The smaller 'Crofton Old Church' at Crofton is one of the oldest known inhabited sites in the area. It was mentioned in the Doomsday Book and it is thought to date back to the reign of King Alfred in the 9th Century. It is believed to have caught the eye of Samuel Pepys in 1662 and was extensively renovated during the 13th Century. In 1662 Samuel Pepys recorded in his diary for 26th April that he ‘observed a little churchyard at Crofton, where the graves were accustomed to be all sowed with Sage’
